MISSION STATEMENT:

The Dill Pickle Food Co-op offers healthy food choices and the benefits of cooperative practice to build a vibrant local community and more sustainable world. We meet community needs and strengthen area diversity through products, services, and education.

WHAT IS A FOOD CO-OP?

Dill Pickle will be a consumer cooperative, a grocery store that is owned and democratically controlled by the members who shop at the store. Any shopper can become a member, and the store will open to everyone, regardless if they are a member. The look and feel of the store and the products on the shelves are controlled by the members, and any financial surplus at years end is distributed back to the members as a patronage refund.

WHERE WILL THE CO-OP GET THE MONEY TO OPEN A STORE?

The startup capital will be provided first by our members in the form of equity investments (stock) of $50-$500 and member loans. We may also leverage that investment to secure a business loan to bring in addition capital funds.

WHY DO WE NEED A COOP WHEN MAJOR GROCERY STORE CHAINS CARRY ORGANIC PRODUCTS?

Firstly, many people are not happy with the quality and location of existing chain stores and would much prefer to shop at a locally-owned store. Secondly, Dill Pickle's commitment to local, organic and healthy food will go far beyond the commitment of chain stores. We will connect residents with local food producers and create a store whose major concern in quality and affordability, not corporate profits.

WHERE WILL THE STORE BE LOCATED? WHEN WILL IT OPEN?

The location of the store has not been decided, but it will reflect the needs of the members. Many of our current members live in and around Logan Square-Bucktown, so the store will likely be located in that general area. We began raising capital from members in early 2006 and we have a lot more money to raise before the store opens.

WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP THE STORE GET STARTED?

More than anything else, we need you to become a paid member and help us recruit others to join. We also need our members to participate in the co-op's governance, including the upcoming board election. Also, please talk to your friends and neighbors about the co-op to help spread awareness of our vision.
